The eighth annual Southeastern Summer Sacred Music Workshop will be held Friday and Saturday, July 28 and 29, 2023, at Mary Our Queen Church in Peachtree Corners, Georgia.

REGISTRATION FOR THIS YEAR’S EVENT CLOSES TODAY, JULY 24, AT 11:59 P.M.

We are pleased to invite you to the eighth annual Southeastern Sacred Music Workshop. This two-day experience, held at the beautiful Mary Our Queen Church in Peachtree Corners, will immerse beginner to advanced singers, conductors, and clergy in the beauty of sacred chant and polyphony.

Led by a faculty with a wealth of experience in sacred music, the workshop offers beginners the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of reading square notes, build the foundations for a solid music program, and develop skills in singing plainchant and polyphony. Advanced musicians will enjoy in-depth courses that will increase your understanding and appreciation of sacred music and equip you with the tools and knowledge to bring it to your parish.

With breakout sessions covering a variety of topics and ensemble work focused on singing the proper and ordinary of the Mass, the workshop is designed to equip choristers, choir masters, cantors, and music directors with the tools they need to build a thriving music program or to reinvigorate a program that has become stagnant.

A registration fee of $100 covers all materials as well as Friday night dinner, Saturday continental breakfast and full lunch. Coffee, tea and snacks will be available both days.

What to expect?

This workshop will introduce beginner participants to plainchant and polyphony, and everyone will have the opportunity to join a chant group of his or her choice from beginner to advanced. Advanced musicians and returning participants will be challenged by new repertoire for polyphonic propers and ordinary.

Breakout sessions covering a variety of topics are interspersed with ensemble work focused on singing the propers and the ordinary of the Mass.

New to chant and thinking this sounds scary? Don’t be intimidated. The workshop is designed to accommodate all levels of proficiency in sacred music. Beginners are highly encouraged to attend! At every workshop there’s a large group who are new to chant.

The event will culminate with a sung Novus Ordo Mass at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Breakout sessions include topics of interest to music directors, singers, organists, and clergy. Topics will include intermediate chant or polyphony, using reductive analysis to learn Gregorian Chant, introducing better practices for Spanish liturgy without compromising cultural traditions, 25 essential Latin hymns every Catholic should know and love, enhancing the rhythmic interpretation of Gregorian chant with the application of semiology, a short history of the Latin Mass since 1969, and the administration of a sacred music program. Additionally, there will be a session on beginner chant and polyphony for those new to these musical styles.
